We also specialize in carpentry. There are several types and occupations a carpenter will specialize in. There are two main divisions of carpentry; construction carpentry and finish carpentry.
What is Construction Carpentry?
Carpenters work in almost every type of construction. They construct, erect, install, and repair structures made from concrete, steel, wood, and other materials. The jobs they do depend on the type of construction, the type of company, and the particular skills of the Carpenter. The basic construction carpentry skills are necessary to be able to complete home renovation, home building, and other construction projects. A carpenter or home renovator needs to be able to read plans, layout a building site, determine the elevations of a site excavation, and concrete footing and other components; build concrete footing and wall forms, frame, and sheath floors, walls, and roofs; and build stairs.
Working for a small home builder, a carpenter might be involved in every part of a project, such as putting up the framework, walls, and roof, and installing attic ventilation units, cabinets, doors, hardwood flooring, molding, paneling, skylights, and windows. In a larger operation, such as a high-rise office building where there is more opportunity for specialized work, a carpenter might do only one task, such as roof framing or installing doors and windows. Construction carpentry skills will also include being able to identify and gather the needed materials, determine the equipment required, and measure and mark the materials for cutting. Working with hand tools and power equipment, carpenters cut and shape the materials, and assemble and install them according to the plans.
What Is Finish Carpentry?
Finish carpentry is sometimes referred to as trim carpentry, but in reality, it involves much more than just the installation of molding in a building or house. Finish carpentry involves working both on the inside and the outside of the house, and it can include building stairs, installing wood siding, hanging doors, and putting in such items as wainscoting, bookcases, and mantelpieces. To become proficient in this skill takes years of practice, where one must become familiar with a wide range of woodworking tools.
The field of finish carpentry involves so many skilled tasks, such as cabinetmaking and stair-building that certain areas of home-building may be handled by just one person or even a small crew. Building stairs and cabinets are two of the more complex tasks, where at least the original work needs to be done in a woodworking shop. Once the cabinets are made or the stairs built, the finish carpenter will have the task of installing these items at the site. Sometimes a finish carpenter will perform both rough and finish work in the same job. This can be more convenient for him because if a separate rough carpenter doesn’t install the walls or flooring perfectly accurate, he will have a hard time making up for those mistakes while installing the trim. By doing both jobs, he ensures that everything is measured and cut properly.
